Target description

Ad hoc measures including declaration of a “Judicial Week” and a special directive issued by the Chief Justice in 2025 to expedite cases have helped to reduce case backlogs.

Target Baseline

" In the period up to 2023, it was common for cases to take anywhere between 1 and 10 years to be decided."

Comment on Target

While ad hoc measures like Judicial Week have been taken to expedite case, specific measures have been taken in the Criminal Procedures Act 2024 with an aim to reduce the time it takes to decide a case, which we find to be a sustainable approach. Other issues affecting delays in deciding cases remain to be addressed.
